Maryland School Choice Fair

THE SCHOOL CHOICE FAIR IS A FORUM FOR FAMILIES TO LEARN ABOUT SCHOOL CHOICE with more than 40 schools including public schools, public charter schools, specialty schools, faith schools, micro schools, on line schools, boarding schools and home schooling. The Fair will also feature representatives from more than 20 summer programs and activities and a HBCU expo. Two workshops, The ABC’S of Independent Schools, and Five Tips for Finding the Right School for Your Child, will provide families with advice about schooling choices.  For entertainment, the Fair will showcase the National School Choice Week Dance, DC Retro Jumpers (Double-Dutch), facepainting, a raffle, as well as a children’s book give-away and an "old school" CD & LP record give-away. Complimentary Chair Massages will be offered by Columbia Chiropractic Center.

Dr. Rona Frederick, Author of "Navigating School Selection 101: A Guide for African American Families", will share tips for how to identify schools that are the right fit for your child.

ABCs of Independent Schools

Black Student Fund Executive Director Leroy Nesbitt will answer questions about admissions and financial aid at independent schools.

A Better Chance

A Better Chance (ABC) will conduct a workshop on ABC programs and provide information on becoming an ABC family.  ABC helps families access boarding, independent, and public schools of high achievement.


The Maryland School Choice Fair will feature Higher Learning: A Taste of the American HBCU tradition. With alumni admissions tables from more than 20 HBCUs, a Step-And-Scroll Drumline and an HBCU academic demonstration featuring the only HBCU platform showcasing the academic offerings of HBCUs; this event is an HBCU extravaganza.

National School Choice Week

National School Choice Week (NSCW) informs, inspires, and empowers parents to discover the K-12 education options available for their children, while generating widespread public awareness of the importance of opportunity in K-12 education.
