How to Find Your College Application Spike
Time and time again, you’ve heard the importance of being a well-rounded student. This is what colleges look for in their student bodies, right? Those straight-A applicants who have dabbled in music, athletics, leadership, and other activities? Actually, that’s not necessarily true. While you should aim to succeed in all your courses, “lopsided” students with a particular talent can have an edge in the admissions process. What does that mean? Let’s take a look at what an application spike is and how you can identify yours.

Working in small groups with a math master, students are presented with math thinking and math problems. These lessons revolve around discrete mathematics such as counting principles, graph theory, probability, and modular arithmetic that makes math feel less like a chore and more like an exploration. Students are also introduced to math learning technology.Josh SparksBSF Math Circle Leader

Anti-Trust and Financial Aid
(CNN)Sixteen top US universities, including Duke, Vanderbilt and Northwestern, are being sued by five former students claiming those schools may be involved in antitrust violations in the way those institutions worked together in determining financial aid awards for students, according to the lawsuit filed in a US District Court in Illinois.
The complaint, which was filed Sunday, alleges that these private national universities have "participated in a price-fixing cartel that is designed to reduce or eliminate financial aid as a locus of competition, and that in fact has artificially inflated the net price of attendance for students receiving financial aid." The suit is asking for class-action status to cover any US citizen or permanent resident who paid tuition, room, or board at these institutions within varying timeframes from 2003 to the present. The plaintiffs want a permanent injunction against this alleged conspiracy, and that they are also seeking restitution and damages to be determined in court. The suit centers around the application of Section 568 of the Improving America's Schools Act of 1994, which allows institutions to collaborate on financial aid formulas if they don't consider the student's financial need in admission decisions. The lawsuit alleges nine schools (Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Georgetown, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern, Notre Dame, the University of Pennsylvania and Vanderbilt) have "made admissions decisions with regard to the financial circumstances of students and their families, " thereby disfavoring students who need financial aid."It claims seven other colleges mentioned in the suit (Brown, the California Institute of Technology, Chicago, Cornell, Emory, Rice and Yale) "may or may not have adhered to need-blind admissions policies, but they nonetheless conspired with the other Defendants.""All Defendants, in turn, have conspired to reduce the amount of financial aid they provide to admitted students," the complaint read.CNN reached out to all 16 colleges in the lawsuit for a response. Yale University told CNN in an email that "Yale's financial aid policy is 100% compliant with all applicable laws." In response to CNN's request for comment, the California Institute of Technology said, "Caltech is currently reviewing the lawsuit and cannot comment on the specific allegations. We have confidence, however, in our financial aid practices."
China's fusion reactor
China's $1 trillion fusion reactor is hotter than the sun
China's "artificial sun" has set a new world record after superheating a loop of plasma to temperatures five times hotter than the sun for more than 17 minutes, state media reported.
The EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak) nuclear fusion reactor maintained a temperature of 158 million degrees Fahrenheit (70 million degrees Celsius) for 1,056 seconds, according to the Xinhua News Agency. The achievement brings scientists a small yet significant step closer to the creation of a source of near-unlimited clean energy.
The Chinese experimental nuclear fusion reactor smashed the previous record, set by France's Tore Supra tokamak in 2003, where plasma in a coiling loop remained at similar temperatures for 390 seconds. EAST had previously set another record in May 2021 by running for 101 seconds at an unprecedented 216 million F (120 million C). The core of the actual sun, by contrast, reaches temperatures of around 27 million F (15 million C).
"The recent operation lays a solid scientific and experimental foundation towards the running of a fusion reactor," experiment leader Gong Xianzu, a researcher at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said in a statement.
Scientists have been trying to harness the power of nuclear fusion — the process by which stars burn — for more than 70 years. By fusing hydrogen atoms to make helium under extremely high pressures and temperatures, so-called main-sequence stars are able to convert matter into light and heat, generating enormous amounts of energy without producing greenhouse gases or long-lasting radioactive waste.

Building More STEM Scholars
BSF STEM is building strong futures
The BSF STEM Initiative is a natural outgrowth of the BSF mission to be a resource for African-American and other underserved students. In this case, a resource to deal with STEM underrepresentation. In 2016, we started with a coding program, and have since built a math enrichment and homework help program; the program is known as Math an’ Coding (MANC). MANC’s services are free, whether the student is an independent school student or not.
